Finding a bat in your in Gulf Shores can be a scary situation. They are nocturnal animals so you would likely hear or see them flying around your home at night. The first thing you should do is close the door of the room it is in and tapes it under the door to keep it from escaping from the room. Bats only need a very small gap to get through, as small as three-eighths of an inch, so make sure the door is sealed well.

Bats can be dangerous in your home because they are known carriers of rabies. You don’t have to be bitten to be exposed. While all bats do not carry rabies, you can’t be sure so every precaution should be taken. These creatures will be active at night while you and your family are sleeping and may be unaware that you could have been in contact with one. They can climb on soft surfaces like blankets, curtains, sheets, or upholstery without your knowledge. Any contact with the saliva is cause for concern. If you are scratched or bitten by one it is very important to have the bat trapped for rabies testing purposes.

Any contact you have should be followed by a rabies test or shot. It is also important to report any bites or contact the local Health Department.
